I keep hearing all the excuses that the republicans are giving for why they had this mad rush to war and they are so ridiculously weak that I cannot sit idly by and watch it go on any longer.
First off; Clinton had the same intelligence in 1998… flash forward to 2002 and we’re being told that there’s a need to attack Iraq because they have weapons of mass destruction. Now, is it just me or would anyone else have had (even) more of a problem with the war in Iraq if you knew that they were basing their argument on four two five year old intelligence? I mean, it seems to me that they said, “Well, he had them then, he’s gotta have’em now!” The first thing that needs to be done is to gather freah intelligence; but then again, fresh intel would have said that there were no weapons – which is something, if you’ll remember, that the weapons inspectors on the ground were saying.
I have some info from the forties that a guy named Hitler is gonna start some trouble. Germany better look out.
The next thing is the whole “They saw the same intelligence that we did,” to which I think the phrase “…just before we provided it to them,” should be added. It wasn’t a bipartisan gathering of info that was shown it was information that was provided. It should be noted that senators and congressmen do not get things like the PDB (Presidential Daily Briefing) and do not get the same level of intelligence as the president.
The last thing I keep hearing is that all the democrats voted to go to war; which they didn’t. They did vote for the use of force, if necessary, to force the compliance of Saddam Hussein. Saddam was complying until it decided that he was not fully cooperating and we attacked… and it turns out that he was cooperating and now we’re stuck in a bad place.
Not for nothing, but be completely honest with yourself; what was your initial reaction when you first heard that we were starting up against Iraq? Remember how things were? The fight was going well in Afghanistan, and it seemed like we’d be catching Osama Bin Laden any day now. It really felt like we’d get the justice that we as a nation wanted…
…then, out of nowhere – Iraq.
That even took a little convincing for John Q. Conservative at first. They say that your initial reaction is usually the correct one.
Just a thought.
